Parish and District Lists
For the purposes of registration, Scotland was divided into parishes and districts. When you find an ancestor in the records you may come across a place name you don’t recognise and have no idea where in Scotland it is.
There are gazetteers, maps and plans in the Library to help you locate places and find out more about the local parish or area.
Other search room guides include:
— List of parishes in each county in Scotland
— Alphabetical list of coterminous (or adjacent) parishes in Scotland
The List of Old Parish Registers provides the covering dates for Old Parish Register births, marriages and deaths in each parish. It will enable you to check that records have survived for the time and place you are researching.
