Credit cards can be used at the Centre

Booking

Do I need to book a seat in advance?

No. You can turn up on the day but if the Centre is full you may not get a seat. To avoid disappointment and to avoid waiting in a queue you are strongly recommended to book your seat in advance.

You can book a seat by completing the online form on the Bookings page. (This page also contains an email address in case the web form is incompatible, and a phone number which you can also use to make your booking).

What happens if I book a seat and can't come in?

Please inform the Centre if you can't come on a day you have booked a seat. This should be done as far in advance as possible, at least the day before the booking if a refund is required. Staff will re-book your seat for another day if you wish or give you a refund.

If you make a provisional booking and don't intend to come in until after 10.00am please let the Centre know, otherwise your seat will be released for sale at 10.00am.

Can I book more than one seat at a time?

Yes. You can book as many seats as are available on the day. You can also hire out the Matheson Dome for a day for up to 38 searchers depending on availability.

Can I book more than one day at a time?

Yes. You can book as many days as you like at a time. You can purchase quarterly and annual search passes. Refer to our Charges page for costs.

Payment

What are the costs for searching, and for copies of documents or images?

How do I pay for copies?

You must pay in advance for copies at the supervisor's desk, where your account will be credited.

Do I need to use credit or debit cards?

No. You can also pay by cash, cheque (payable to Scottish Government), travellers cheque (in sterling, with picture ID), or vouchers.

Can I get a refund if I don't use up my credit?

Yes. If you don't use up your credit or want to keep it, the balance will be refunded to you or can be kept in your account for up to one year.

How long does my credit stay valid on my account?

Your credit will stay on your account for up to one year and can be used or refunded during this time. A reminder email will be sent to customers if their account is £5 or over in credit advising them to use their credit or get a refund.

No reminder will be sent for amounts under £5.
